Stroke Programme
Stroke is the biggest cause of long-term adult disability in Western countries. A range of impairments may occur as a result of the stroke (including physical, cognitive, communicative or emotional) and the impact of these difficulties are not only felt by the person with stroke but also affect family, friends, carers, employers and the community. Because of its impact in Scotland, stroke has been classified as a health research priority.
The Stroke Programme specializes in the development, conduct and delivery of high quality evidence relating to the effectiveness of stroke rehabilitation interventions. Our research interests include basic care issues (e.g. incontinence, oral health care), therapeutic interventions (e.g. physiotherapy, speech and language therapy) and interventions that address the needs of stroke survivors as they adapt to life after stroke (e.g. returning to work, psychosocial issues). Our research strives to impact on stroke care and so we work closely with stroke survivors, their carers, multidisciplinary stroke care teams and NHS and academic partners across Scotland and the UK.
